What are tissues?
When a person dies, he or she may be able to donate both organs and
tissues.
Organs include the heart, liver, kidneys, pancreas, small intestines and
lungs.

Tissues and eyes are different: they include corneas, sclera, certain veins
and arteries, heart valves, bone, tendons, and skin.
Donor Services of Indiana specializes in
tissues and eyes.
Pledge to Donate
Donated tissue can significantly improve the quality of life for
many recipients
.
Skin is used as a temporary dressing for burn victims and to protect exposed areas for
cancer patients, people with severe abrasions, or people who have had an amputation.
Bone is extremely versatile. It is used in orthopedic surgery to facilitate healing of
fractures, and the rebuilding or remodeling of bone for total hip or knee replacement.
Heart valves are used to replace defective valves, particularly in young children born with
congenital heart defects.
Tendons are used primarily in orthopaedics to repair torn Anterior Cruciate Ligaments.
Arteries and Veins, such as the saphenous/femoral vein, are used in cardiac bypass
surgery and other procedures.
Eyes, including corneas and sclera tissue, can restore sight to people with corneal
blindness, or relieve debilitating pain cause by certain eye problems. For details, visit the
Eye Bank page of this site.
