the frontiers of life and health

Donated tissue is not only used for transplants, but also for research. Scientists use
donated tissue to research and find cures for diseases. Tissue donation is imperative to
the work and success of medical researchers. Researchers are currently trying to find
cures and treatments for cancer, diabetes, inflammatory diseases, and brain disorders.
Even if you have had a medical condition like cancer or diabetes this DOES NOT mean
that your tissue isn’t useful to scientists. In fact it is quite the opposite. Almost everyone
can donate tissue for medical research, and by doing so help to expand the frontiers of
life and health. There is no substitute for donated human tissue for researchers trying to
cure diseases and develop new therapies.
Everyone benefits from tissue donation, regardless of whether it is used for
transplantation or research. Scientists are currently researching hereditary diseases that
may affect your children and grandchildren. The cures and treatments needed to protect
the people you care about most, lie in your donated tissue.
The process of tissue donation is the same for both transplant use and research. The
decision is made by medical experts at the time of donation. Everyone should have the
opportunity to make an informed decision about tissue donation. You should discuss
your wish to donate with your family, so that everyone understands the choices that are
being made. See “Pledge to Donate.”
Tissue donation enables researchers to look at the cells and DNA of specific tissues. The
researchers study both healthy and diseased tissue with the goal of developing solutions
to treat and prevent disease. Without tissue donation, it would be very difficult to make
accurate predictions for the effects of medications, and it would take much longer to
develop cures and treatments for the diseases that cause human sickness and death.
Here are some important facts you should know about tissue donation:
- Almost anyone can donate tissue. If a specific disease would prevent you
from donating for transplantation, your tissue can be used for biomedical
research.
- Research scientists at academic institutions or commercial genomic and
pharmaceutical companies who work on discovering new diagnostics and
disease treatments will use your donated tissue.
- Tissue donation will still allow for an open casket funeral, and will not
delay the funeral in any way.
- There is no cost to donate tissue. All costs associated with donation are
paid by the recovery agency.
