Every day, people threatened with blindness are spared that fate thanks to the loving
families who make eye donations upon the death of a loved one. Providing the services that
make this possible is the mission of the Eye Bank of Northern Indiana at Donor Services of

are common. Corneal transplantation is a medical miracle that can mean the difference
between a life of sight and a life of darkness. In addition to corneas, other parts of the
eye including the sclera or white part of the eye are used in some types of plastic surgery
involving the eyes, and in glaucoma surgery.
Wouldn’t it make you feel good to live the rest of your life knowing that when you die,
you’ll be offering the gift of sight to someone else?
The Northern Indiana Eye Bank is a non-profit medical facility that provides human eye
tissue for corneal transplants, research and education throughout Indiana, the United
States, and the world.
The Eye Bank meets a need that never ends, and never will. The rate of eye donations is
far less than the need. At present, there are over 44,000 corneal transplants done every
year, making it the most common type of transplant. The donated eyes must be used
within about a week of the donor’s death. The Eye Bank is a procuring, processing, and
distribution center for donated human eye tissue. The Eye Bank is a member of Eye Bank
Association of America and strictly adheres to its medical standards and Code of Ethics.
In addition to providing corneal and scleral tissue for transplant the Eye Bank supports
numerous research and educational projects. Donated eye tissue is used to find cures for
blinding disorders such as Glaucoma, Diabetes related eye disorders, Retinitis
Pigmentosa, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and many more, for your neighbors
right here in Indiana and for emergency cases worldwide.
The Northern Indiana Eye Bank at DSI also:
- Conducts informational and educational programs for the public.
- Coordinates events from the time of a donor's death to the transplantation of
corneal or scleral tissue.
- Maintains a laboratory to receive and process donated eye tissue and to distribute
the tissue to the transplant surgeon.
- Cooperates and coordinates activities with other member Eye Banks of the Eye
Bank Association of America for emergency needs anywhere in the nation.
