How DSI helps clinicians evaluate donors
|
Consent is requested by a trained Designated Requestor. Donor
selection is based initially on information available at the time of
All procured tissues are initially placed in quarantine, and donor evaluation continues until all
records are reviewed. Medical records and autopsy reports are ordered. Donor family
interviews done at the time of the referral are reviewed, and additional interviews are done if
indicated. The donation coordinator reviews all of this information, continuing to obtain additional
information if needed, until it is felt that all relevant information has been obtained and evaluated.
During this time, infectious disease testing is completed. To ensure that the blood sample is
adequate for testing, the potential for dilution of the donor's plasma by administration of large
volumes of crystalloid or blood products is evaluated. Samples sent for testing have been
determined to have minimal potential for dilution based on the evaluation of medical records. All
donors are tested for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), hepatitis C antibody (HCV), hepatitis
B core antibody (HBc), syphilis (RPR), HIV 1 and 2 antibody (HIV 1/2), human
T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) and HIV p24 antigen. Results must be reported as
nonreactive. PCR HIV testing of a frozen lymphocyte sample may be done in place of the HIV
p24 antigen. CMV testing and ABO/Rh typing are completed whenever possible.
The vast majority of tissue is returned to help people right here in Indiana.

Once all of the information has been obtained and reviewed by the coordinator, the donor chart
is reviewed for completeness by the donation specialist and then forwarded to the quality
assurance department for QA review and sign off.
the death. This includes a review of medical records, discussion with medical staff, and a family
interview using a standardized screening form. Donation coordinators determine preliminary
suitability and schedule the recovery of tissues that are then placed in quarantine while donor
evaluation is completed.
