Donor Services of Indiana has developed a comprehensive program to assist and comfort a
donor family. The Family Support Services Care Program provides comfort and counseling
services to a donor’s family to aid in the recovery and healing process.
Donor Services of Indiana makes the initial contact to gather necessary family medical history.
A Family Care Coordinator will also contact the family.
Follow-up Procedure
30 days after the death of donor – A letter is sent to the family thanking them for their
consideration of donation as well as support booklets appropriate to the age and relationship to
the donor. The letter and grief support materials are sent to all families who have expressed
interest in donation, including those whose loved one was precluded due to medical findings.
Six to eight weeks after the death of donor – A donor medallion is sent to the family along
with a listing of local community support groups (Compassionate Friends, MADD, Suicide
Survivors, etc.)
Three to six months after the death of donor – Any further specific implant information is
provided to the family as well as a letter expressing gratitude and offering grief support outlets.
Nine months after the death of donor - Any further specific implant information is provided to
the family as well as an invitation to provide information for a donor quilt.
Anniversary of death – Two weeks before the anniversary a card is sent along with a care
note. A phone call is placed to the donor’s family to check the progress of grief therapy and
support and to determine whether the family has other needs for assistance.
Holiday Card – A holiday care note is sent to assist with the grief related to major holidays and
the family loss.
Memorial Service – An invitation to
attend the Annual May Memorial service
to honor and remember our donors and
families is sent to the family.
Donor Services of Indiana strives to
provide continual support for the grieving
family members and assist in their
transition. The daily care and support
directed to donor families is an integral
part of our activities.
